Nick Bollettieri

A world-famous coach who revolutionized the idea of the “tennis academy,” then set his sights on training elite athletes in all disciplines. “Headmaster Bollettieri gives invaluable training tips, marital counseling, pasta recipes, gurudimentary cosmology, kick butt homilies – never, never ‘No comment.’ What more could you ask of a guy?” Tennis announcer Bud Collins on Nick Bollettieri

Nick Bollettieri founded one of the most powerful tennis academies in the country in 1978. The self-titled NBTA would go on to prepare its students for the rigors of the pro game, including such notable names as Agassi, Seles, Becker, Kournikova, Haas, Sharapova, Jankovic and the Williams sisters.

The academy continued to grow into the mid-1980s, when Bob Kain’s IMG entered the picture and acquired the NBTA. After another half-decade-plus of work with top tennis players, the NBTA expanded in 1994, with the addition of new sports and sport-specific training. The complex is now over 180 acres, with scholastic facilities as well as athletic.

Nick has been named the 1991 USPTA Coach of the Year, served as the Keynote Speaker at Oxford graduation ceremonies in 1996, was named the United States Olympic Committee National Coach of the Year in 1999 and was listed #16 on Tennis Magazine’s 50 Most Influential People in Tennis in 2000.

Bollettieri was elected to the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame in 2002.
