John Cappelletti

Penn State All-American and Heisman winner, and nine-year NFL vet.

John Cappelletti was born June 9, 1952, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. As an All-American halfback at Penn State University, Cappelletti led the Nittany Lions to a 12-0 season, thrilling fans with a 16-9 Orange Bowl over Louisiana State.

His senior year, Cappelletti earned the prestigious Heisman Trophy after scoring 17 touchdowns and averaging 5.3 yards a carry. That same year, 1973, he was given the Camp Award.

The following year, Cappelletti was a first-round NFL draft for the LA Rams, with whom he played until being placed on the Injured Reserve List in 1979. He was traded to the San Diego Chargers in 1980, and retired three years later.

Cappelletti was elected to the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame in 1989.
