Giorgio Chinaglia

One of the top stars in the North American Soccer League

He was a defender’s darkest nightmare, a robust opportunist who could be shackled for all but a moment or two. Then, the finishing touch, applied with either foot or his head. Giorgio Chinaglia was the perfect point man for the jetset New York Cosmos, arguably the greatest soccer team ever assembled in North America.

Along with Pele and Franz Beckenbauer, Chinaglia was at the heart of the Cosmos squad. One of the most prolific scorers in league history, he notched 275 goals in 274 games and captured five scoring titles. He also set the league mark with 12 points in a game, including five goals.

Currently, Chinaglia is a high-profile soccer analyst, and was a studio host for the 2002 World Cup broadcasts on ABC and ESPN.

Chinaglia was the NASL MVP in 1981. He was elected to the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame in 1988.
