A colorful, animated trainer who worked with many of the best fighters of the 20th century.
During the 50-plus years that Lou Duva has been in the boxing business, he has worked as a bucket boy, cut man, trainer and promoter; he also fought as a welterweight. He’s been recognized as one of the outstanding managers and trainers in the sport.
Known to some as the “Raging Bulldog,” Duva never stops fighting for his fighters. Tenacious in the corner and a master motivator, he’s been voted manager of the year in 1985 and trainer of the year in 1987.
Duva has worked over 80 world title fights and has many world championships to his credit. Among his wards: Pernell “Sweet Pea” Whitaker, Meldrick Taylor, Mark Breland, Johnny Bumphus, Vinny Pazienza, Bobby Czyz and Evander “Real Deal” Holyfield.
Duva was elected to the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame in 1996 and the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1997.
