Joseph DeNucci

was born August 30, 1939 in Newton, MA. In 1956, while just a junior in high school, DeNucci won a Golden Gloves championship. Just one year later, on March 30, 1957, DeNucci had his first professional fight, a second round knockout of Charles Smith in Boston. DeNucci went on to win his first 16 professional decisions, and finished his career with a record of 54-14-4. Throughout the 1960s, many of boxing’s top middleweights came to Boston to face DeNucci, including Ralph “Tiger” Jones, Joey Giardello and Emile Griffith.

DeNucci began a successful career in politics in 1976, when he ran a successful campaign for the Massachusetts House of Representatives. In 1986 he was elected as Massachusetts State Auditor, one of the Commonwealth’s most important offices. He remained in office until 2011, and is one of the state’s most respected and best loved public figures.

Joe DeNucci was inducted to the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame in 2004.
